The Florida Keys are an archipelago of islands which start from the southernmost tip of Florida and curve into the Gulf of Mexico. The largest is Key Largo, also the most northerly and linked to Miami Dade County on the mainland via two road routes. The self proclaimed 'Diving Capital of the World' scuba diving is the main attraction here but by no means the only one, with many other ways of taking in the land, sea, and underwater attractions. Part of Monroe country, which also incorporates the Everglades, the island is as popular with eco-tourists as scuba divers and Key Largo hotels, as well as providing access to these natural wonders, often adopt some of the local eco-charm.
The Everglades National Park lies west of Key Largo, and the only living coral reef in America lies east, between them accounting for most of the leisure time spent away from the island itself. Bird watching and kayaking are popular ways to experience the Everglades, while it is the underwater delights of the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park which most draw the tourists. There are numerous dive and snorkelling centres and services, often associated with the hotels on the Key, to allow visitors memorable underwater adventures, whether viewing the reef or for wreck dives, and glass-bottomed boat trips for those less adventurous. Sport fishing is another favourite way to take to the waters.
There is plenty of tropical flora and fauna on the Key itself and the scenic views and natural landscapes have inspired countless artists, whose work can generally be found in the galleries and often for sale elsewhere. It is an eco-culture which pervades throughout the Keys, and in Key Largo is translated into a series of festivals and events and a laid back ambience to many of the cafés, bars and restaurants. That Key Largo is the first of the Keys and just an hour from the main airports for Miami and Fort Lauderdale in southern Florida, makes it a good stop over point too for those looking to explore further along the Keys and primarily to Key West, famous for its annual Fantasy Fest.
With so many of the activities water-based, it is unsurprising that most hotels will occupy coastal locations. These can however take on a variety of forms, from exclusive resorts with private beaches to eco-style lodges with on-site facilities for scuba, fishing and other ways to spend leisure time on the seas. Often terms the American Caribbean, the resort style hotels are .the preferred options for romantic beach getaways and many of these hotels host destination weddings. They will tend to have a greater degree of recreational features too, such as sports courts, pools, marinas, and tour services. In essence many are resort hotels which could be in any paradise location, but within Key Largo have the added benefit of the local natural and cultural attractions.
Lodges, motels and other smaller independent hotel options may be less similarly blessed with such extensive leisure facilities but most places will have all the visitor information and services on hand to make the most of any stay in Key Largo. These are places too, in which to imbibe some of the local flavour and culture of the Keys and will often have great bars and restaurants which can compete very favourably with any on the island. Some places are pet-friendly, even more are family friendly, and all will provide guests with the kind of hospitality for which the Florida Keys are renowned. The Keys are one of the most popular holiday destinations in America and while it is the natural attractions and activities which draw the crowds, it is the hotels which provide the best access to them.
